Emperor Showa ruled from 1926-1989. This is known as the 'Showa Era..'
The 29th of April was celebrated as the Emperor's birthday. After his death, the celebration was kept to honour the emperor. It was then named Greenery day, because of the Emperor's love of nature.
In 2007, Greenery day was moved to the 4th of May. Greenery day no longer honoured the emperor. It became a celebration of nature. The new celebration on the 29th of April was changed to Showa day.
One of the celebrations on Showa Day is flying streamers in the shape of fish. They are also flown on Constitution Day. Below is two pictures of the streamers.

Many people go to pray at shrines on Shower day, and as you can see in the video below, they can get very crowded.
