Greenery day was originally celebrated on 29th of April. Greenery Day originally celebrated Emperor Showa's rule, but now has been changed to celebrate the natural environment.
The celebration was named Greenery day because Emperor Showa liked nature. After he died the celebration was held on his birthday, until being moved.
In 2007, the celebration was moved. The new celebration on the 29th of April was Showa Day, a celebration of the Emperor's life. This meant that Greenery Day was moved to the 4th of May, and was changed to celebrate nature, as it remains.
